Shimla
is the State Capital of Himachal Pradesh, with its population around 1.6 lacs
(Shimla town). It was the Summer Capital of India under the British rule. Shimla
has witnessed many important historical events, such as the famous Shimla Pact
between India & Pakistan, which was signed here. The place is also famous
for its natural beauty, architectural buildings, wooden crafts and apples.
The british empire may have ceased to exist, but its echoes linger, on in Shimla
(22050. As the summer capital of the British in India, this was the country
focus for the better part of every and now, it is state capital of Himachal
Prdesh today it has well developed facilities easy accessibility and numerous
attractions make it one of India's most popular hill resort. Placed in the lower
ranges of the Himalaya mountains, it is surrounded by pine,deodar, oak and rhododendrom
forest. Towards the north lie the now-covered high ranges while the valleys
breathe whispering streams and swaying fields. Within the town are host of splendid
colonial edifices quaint cottages and charming and walks. Shimla holds a variety
of shopping ,sport and entertainment.

Spread across 12 kms along a ridge that overlooks terraced hillsides and cultivations,
Shimla is magnificently robed in dense forests of oak and pine, fur and rhododendron,
and it is best to travel here on the slow train from Kalka. Shimla also is a
convenient base for variety of adventure sports such as Skiing, Trekking, Fishing
and Golfing etc.
Shimla Sporting Activities
Skiing : The skiing season generally commences in the first fortnight of January
and continues till Mid-March depending upon snow conditions
Golfing : Nine hole Golf Course at Naldhera, 23 km from Shimla.

Fishing : Trout fishing is available at Rohru 110 km from Shimla and at Seema
1 km from Rohru. Mahaseer fishing is available at Tattapani 43 km from Shimla.
Trekking : The Shimla-Kinnaur region offers some exciting trekking opportunities
viz.
a) Shimla to Kulu via Jaloni Pass (66 kms).
b) Shimla to Kulu via Bashleo Pass (56 kms).
c) Sarahen to Sangla (106 kms).
Climate in Shimla
In winter, the temperture can drop below freezing point when heavy wollens are
required. Summer temperture are mild and light wollens/cottons are recommended.

How to Reach Shimla
The airport is at Jubbarhatti, 23km away. Shimla is connected to Kalka by an
enchanting narrow gauge railway line- where even a quaint rail-car plys. By
road, Chandigarh is 117 km Manali is 280km,chali is 45km and Delhi is at a distance
of 370km. From Delhi, the driving time is about eight hours from Delhi, Manali
and Chandigarh, luxry coaches and taxis ply to shimla.
